The Trip
Day 1: Ushuaia – Set sail along the Beagle Channel
Day 2-3: At Sea – Cross the Drake Passage
Day 4-11: Antarctic – Explore the Antarctic Peninsula
Day 12-13: At Sea – Cross the Drake Passage
Day 14: Ushuaia – Disembark
Day 1
Arrive in Ushuaia and board the boat. In the afternoon set sail along the scenic waterways of the Beagle Channel.
Day 2-3
The next couple of days will be spent crossing the Drake Passage. There will be a series of on board lectures and presentations by Antarctic experts to help you learn about the geology and wildlife of the white continent. Up on deck you will have the opportunity to see many sea birds that follow the wake of the boat.
Day 4-7
In the waterways of the Antarctic Peninsula you will take at least two zodiac excursions per day in search of wildlife. The first goal is the sail south of the Antarctic Circle into Matha Strait. If weather conditions are favourable you will push further southwards looking for historic and wildlife sites.
When you reach the most southerly point you will navigate north along the Antarctic Peninsula, cruising through the Crystal Sound, Lemiare Channel, Neumeyer Channel and the Garlache Strait. Landings will be determined based on weather conditions, but likely choices include Neko Harbour, Wilhelmina Bay, Petermann Island and the Yalours. During these landings you will have the opportunity to see Weddell Seals, crabeater seals, elephant seals, skuas and huge colonies of penguins including the Adelie.
On Half Moon Island you will visit a colony of chinstrap penguins that share the island with fur seals and blue-eyed shags. During zodiac rides you will see humpback whales dining on krill as well as orcas and Minke whales. You will step on the continent proper at either Paradise Harbour or Neko Harbour. Although it will not be your first look at the Antarctic, your first step on the continent itself will be a special one. The scenery is amazing, think huge icebergs, mountains and glaciers. You will have the chance to camp on shore if you wish.
Day 8-9
Leave the Antarctic behind and cross back over the Drake Passage. Spend time with your fellow guests sharing stories of the things you’ve seen. Go back on deck to watch for wildlife and attend lectures and presentations given by Polar experts.
Day 10
Disembark at Ushuaia.
