Useful information about Antarctica

Currency

The following guidelines apply, but will vary depending on the vessel and journey chosen. Detailed information specific to your journey will be sent to you prior to departure.

On board most vessels the US Dollar is the standard currency. Visa, MasterCard, Diners' Club and American Express are accepted on board for settling your account. The on board shop accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express only.

The currency on board the M/V Ushuaia is US Dollars or Euros cash only. On the Akademik Shokalskiy, Grigoriy Mikheev & Atlantic Crossings, the standard currency is the Euro. Other currencies may be accepted at the discretion of the hotel manager at prevailing rates. Visa card and Euro/MasterCard are also accepted.

If your itinerary includes a stay in Ushuaia or Buenos Aires, you may need some Argentine Pesos, which can be easily obtained by exchanging US Dollars locally. If your itinerary includes a stay in Punta Arenas, you may need some Chilean Pesos.

If you are travelling on an ice-breaker voyage and your itinerary includes a stay in Australia or New Zealand, you may need to obtain some Australian Dollars or New Zealand Dollars. These can be exchanged easily from Pound Sterling or US Dollars. Credit cards are also widely accepted in both countries.

How to get there

There are no group air arrangements in conjunction with any of the Antarctic voyages. Any air arrangements can be requested on an individual basis with routes varying depending on the voyage chosen. For cruises departing from Ushuaia flights are generally from the UK to Buenos Aires with Aerolineas Argentinas, British Airways or other European carrier (involving a connection in a European city) and then from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia. A change of airport and possibly an overnight in Buenos Aires may be necessary between flights. For cruises departing from Punta Arenas, flights are generally from the UK to Santiago with either Iberia or Lan Chile (both via Madrid) and then from Santiago to Punta Arenas. Select Latin America are only able to book international air arrangements departing from the UK.
