Tierra del Fuego: The End of the World
Feasible: Year round
Recommended season: September to April
Overnights in a hotel of your choice to explore this amazing area. See our Ushuaia Hotels list. We particularly recommend the following excursions.
Half Day Ushuaia City Trek – 2-3 hours, Easy
Tierra del Fuego not only contains amazing natural beauty, it has also been the site where the most courageous navigators of the world arrived to tempt their fate. The history of Ushuaia combines stories of the Yamana, the native inhabitants of the area, the stories of pirates and explorers such as FitzRoy and Darwin and the amazing development of the city in the last years. While enjoying a relaxing walk in the city, we reach the recently developed neighbourhoods high in the mountains. From here we start a hike following an old logging path, to get into the interesting Southern Beech Forest and end at a lookout point, where we stop for a snack prior to returning to town.
Rate: £31 per person private.
Beagle Channel Navigation – 3 hours
Three hours navigating the legendary waters of the Beagle Channel, where the Andes plunge into the sea to reappear in the Antarctic Peninsula. The Beagle Channel is located South of Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego and overlooks the islands that extend all the way to Cape Horn. It was first discovered by FitzRoy expedition in 1830 and later again with Darwin in 1833. Anglican missionaries first settled it in 1860.
Departures: 1500 hrs year round. Additional departure at 0900 hrs from October to March.
Note: Departures are subject to weather conditions.
Rate: £31 per person shared.
In Search of the Beavers – 4 hours, Easy
Beavers are completely herbivorous mammals living on twigs, bark and leaves (to which they add grass in spring and summer). They build dams for protection and as a winter reserves of food. We depart evenings from Ushuaia. We enter a private ranch and cross the Andean Range in a comfortable Land Rover Defender. After a 25 minutes’ drive, we will cut deep into the Sub Antarctic beech forest and reach a beaver’s dam. We will be able to see the beavers at work. Due to the lack of predators, they have become extraordinarily abundant. Late evening return to Ushuaia - after a dinner consisting of a healthy stew, with wonderful views of the city at night.
Rate: £124 per person private, £27 per person shared.
Tierra del Fuego National Park Hiking and Boat trip – 7 hours, Moderate
Full day visit to the Tierra del Fuego National Park. Upon arrival in the park, we start a 6-km (about 2-3 hrs) trek to the coast, from a sheltered bay to another, with breathtaking views of the Beagle Channel. Hiking through this beech forest, we will look for the Magellanic woodpecker, Austral parakeets, black-chested buzzard eagles and Andean Condors. Embarkation on an 18 people zodiac boat and head towards Isla Redonda (15 min navigation) for lunch and an afternoon short hike on the island. On the way back to Lapataia Bay by boat (25 min), we will look for cormorants, albatrosses and petrels. Upon arrival, we will board our vehicle back to Ushuaia.
Rate: £124 per person private, £41 per person shared. Includes: bilingual guides, exclusive vehicle max. 15 participants, entrance fee, lunch.
Tierra del Fuego National Park Hiking and Bird-watching – 7 hours, Easy
The Tierra del Fuego National Park encompasses the rich diversity of the Sub-Antarctic beech forest and offers many opportunities for wildlife spotting. This is a ‘soft’ exploration of the National Park in a private car and with a naturalist guide who will disclose the natural wonders such as the Magellanic woodpecker (the largest in South America), Austral parakeets, black-chested buzzard eagles and Andean Condors, to mention but a few. Lunch included.
Rate: £125 per person private.
Harberton Estancia & Penguin Rockery – 10 hours, Moderate, October to April
An introduction to Tierra del Fuego's history, wildlife and traditions. We start from Ushuaia driving East towards Harberton`s small airstrip. From there we get on our zodiac boat to cross the Beagle channel to Gable Island. Gable Island is the largest in the Beagle Channel. It is wild, isolated and uninhabited. The only signs of humans are an old sheep-shearing storehouse and some traces of the Yamana natives. In a comfortable refuge we enjoy a warm and healthy breakfast to get ready for a 2-hour hike, crossing the island to the South to reach the Beagle Channel. On the island, we will hike and see old native settlements and many birds, such as gulls, steamer ducks, petrels, cormorants, albatrosses and Magellan Penguins, among others. After lunch resume our navigation to the Penguin rookery at Martillo Island, the domain of the Magellanic Penguin and some few Gentoo Penguins. The unique location of this island (close to the point where the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean waters merge) allows for an incredible variety of rich sub-aquatic life, making it an amazing spot for birdwatching (petrels, skuas, cormorants, sea gulls and albatross). Return to Harberton. This estancia belongs to the descendants of the first British Missionaries that reached the area - Rev. Thomas Bridges- and was managed for many years by Ms Natalie Goodall, a foremost naturalist in the area. After a short visit we return to Ushuaia. Important note: Penguins arrive at the rookery at the beginning of November.
Rate: £175 per person private, £62 per person shared.
M/V Mare Australis – 4 days/3 nights cruise
We would highly recommend combining any stay or tour in Ushuaia with a cruise on the M/V Mare Australis, an expedition cruise ship exploring Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego on 3, 4 or combined 7 night cruises, from October to April each year. The M/V Mare Australis sails every Saturday from the Chilean city of Punta Arenas, and every Wednesday from the Argentine city of Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego.
The Staten Island Wildlife Paradise – 5 days/4 nights cruise
The Staten Island Reserve is located at the easternmost extreme of the Southern Andes. Evergreen forests thrive in the humid climate. The Island’s jagged coastline with fjords, coves and bays, offers the perfect habitat for coastal species and counts historical sites from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Airline tickets: Buenos Aires-Ushuaia approximately £240 per person return, subject to change. An airport tax of US$5 per person is payable locally upon departure from Ushuaia.
Note: All itineraries and rates are subject to change.
