Useful information

Currency

Since 2000 the US dollar has been the only official currency. The old Sucre notes are invalid. (1 US$ = 100 cents). It can be hard to change large notes, so take some of small denominations. Many false notes are in circulation. Travellers cheques (in US dollars) are safer, but can be hard to change and subject to up to 5% commission. Credit cards are the most convenient backup, but a good supply of cash is essential. Visa and Mastercard are more widely accepted than American Express or Diners. Hotels may charge up to 10% for payment by card. ATM's are common in Ecuador but often subject to a low daily limit. Money Orders are not accepted.

Visas

British citizens can find up-to-date travel advice on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website. Citizens of other countries should consult their local Ecuadorian consulate.

How to get there

There are no direct flights from the UK to Ecuador. Flights are normally via Madrid with Iberia or via Amsterdam with KLM. It is also possible to fly via the US, however one should allow at least 3 hours transit/connecting times, as passengers are required to clear customs and go through passport control in the US. The usual gateway for Ecuador is Quito, but those who don't like altitudes should consider Guayaquil on the coast. Select Latin America are only able to book international air arrangements departing from the UK. Flights to Galapagos are with either TAME or Aerogal airlines and are booked in conjunction with any cruise.
