Male frigatebird
It is easy to see frigatebirds breeding in Galapagos (though times vary around the archipelago). The male chooses the place and builds the nest then inflates an enormous throat pouch like a big red balloon to try and attract the attention of a passing female. If one shows signs of interest, he will also shake his head, flap his wings, and let out a strange warbling call until she is either captivated or flies away. See also: |
