Ecuador now uses the US dollar (1 US$ = 100 cents), some local coins are minted. Beware of fake banknotes.
British citizens can find up-to-date travel advice on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website. Citizens of other countries should consult their local Ecuadorian consulate.
There are no direct flights from the UK to Ecuador. Flights are normally via Madrid with Iberia or via Amsterdam with KLM. It is also possible to fly via the US, however this means long transit times (minimum 3 hours), as passengers are required to clear customs and go through passport control in the US. The usual gateway for Ecuador is Quito, but those who don't like altitudes should consider Guayaquil on the coast.
Select Latin America are only able to book international air arrangements departing from the UK. Flights to Galapagos are with either TAME or Aerogal airlines and are booked in conjunction with any cruise. From the mainland to Galapagos it take one and a half hours, but from Quito add at least another hour as the plane stops in Guayaquil.
