Lima - Cusco - Machu Picchu - Puerto Maldonado

Visit Lima with it's historical centre, then up to the Andes to Cusco the ancient capital of the Incas, and stay near the fabled Machu Picchu ruins. Plus experience the Amazon headwaters in a rainforest lodge.

Itinerary

Day 1: Lima
Arrival in Lima reception at the airport and transfer to Eko Hotel. Overnight.

Day 2: Lima
(Breakfast)
Morning or afternoon guided visit to the Cathedral, Main Square, San Francisco Convent and its Catacombs and the residential areas of San Isidro, Miraflores, the new commercial area South of Lima, the ocean front to enjoy a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. Return to the hotel. Overnight.

Day 3: Lima - Cusco
(Breakfast)
Early transfer to the airport and departure to Cusco. Arrival in Cusco, reception at the airport and transfer to Sonesta Posada del Inca or Ruinas Hotel. Rest of the morning at leisure. 2:30 p.m. Visit to the nearby ruins including the Sacsahuaman Fortress, overlooking the city of Cusco, a pre-Inca architectural masterpiece; Quenquo, a rock sanctuary whose main attraction is a monolithic altar representing a puma; the red fortress of Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay, a beautiful fountain fed by a spring forming a series of basins. Continue the tour to the city of Cusco: the Main Square, the Cathedral and the Santo Domingo Church or Temple of the Sun ( Koricancha). (Excursion for 4 hours). Late afternoon return to the hotel.

Day 4: Cusco - Machu Picchu
(Breakfast, Lunch)
Early transfer to the train station and departure for a day tour to Machu Picchu (3 and half hour trip). Arrival in Aguas Calientes Station and bus ride up to the ruins (25 minutes). Guided visit of Machu Picchu built completely of stone blocks, fitted together with masterful precision. This fabulous city has houses, temples, warehouses, a large central square, all connected by narrow roads and steps, and is surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side which were used for agriculture. Lunch at Machu-Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. In the afternoon, descent by bus to Aguas Calientes and overnight at Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

Day 5: Machu Picchu - Cusco
(Breakfast)
Morning at leisure. (second bus and second entrance to Machu Picchu not included). In the afternoon return to Cusco and transfer to Sonesta Posada del Inca. Overnight.

Day 6: Cusco - Puerto Maldonado - Reserva Amazonica
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Transfer to the airport and departure by plane to Puerto Maldonado. After a twenty-five minute flight, arrival, reception and transfer to the river port for the motorboat trip to Reserva Amazonica. Arrival in the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, walk through the rainforest and visit to the medicinal plant (more than 200 native species) and orchid garden. Dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Reserva Amazonica
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Trip down Madre de Dios River by motorboat. Thirty minute walk to Sandoval Lake. Boat ride on the lake to observe the wealth of flora and fauna. Swimming in the lake and a visit to the legendary Fitzcarrald ship. Participants will see a variety of fauna (widgeon, cranes and macaws) and flora (seiba and schihuahuaco trees). Return to the lodge for lunch. Boat trip to the Monkey Island (Isla Rolín), a recovery center where guests can view different types of primates in the process of readapting to their natural environment. Visit to a native plot where guests can become familiar with the variety of Amazon crops grown. On the way back to the lodge, observation of caymans on the shores of the Madre de Dios River. Dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Reserva Amazonica - Puerto Maldonado - Lima
(Breakfast)
Transfer by motorboat to Puerto Maldonado and to the airport for departure by plane to Lima. After a two hours flight (intermediate stop in Cusco), arrival, reception at the airport and transfer to Eco Hotel. Day at leisure for last minute shopping or optional tours. Overnight.

Day 9: Lima - onwards flight

Transfer to the airport and departure.
