explore the Amazon plains and foothills of the Andes

As you arrive in Santa Cruz you’ll head straight out to explore in depth one of the most attractive and affluent cities in Bolivia. For the next two days you’ll be staying at the Hotel LP where you’ll use the city as a base to explore the Amazon plains and foothills of the Andes. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the mysterious pre-Inca ruins of Samaipata as well as hiking through the great giant fern forests in the Amboro National Park.

head for the hills

Next stop is higher up in the Andes. Board your flight to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Sucre where you will spend the next two nights at the Hotel Independencia.  With our local guides you’ll explore the city as well as the Cal Orck’o, the world’s largest paleontological site with over 5,000 dinosaur tracks from the Cretaceous period.

silver production and salt flats

Ascending down into the valleys that cut through the highlands you will arrive in Potosi, also declared a UNESCO World Heritage. Famed for its silver, you’ll learn about the extraction and production of the metal through a visit to the Mint House and mine. Continue on towards Uyuni crossing branches of the Andes range passing old mining centres and villages, spectacular landscapes and traditional Indian communities. A highlight of any journey to Bolivia is the famous salt flats which you will cross with your guide. You’ll have the opportunity to see locals producing salt, drive across the bizarre white landscape, see the mummies in the village of Coquesa and walk over the ‘Isla Incahuasi’, an island of volcanic rock and cactus. During your visit you will stay two nights at the wonderful salt hotel, Palacio de Sal.

high cities ancient civilizations

Fly north to the breathtaking capital of La Paz where you’ll stay at the cosy Hotel Rosario. After taking some time to explore the highest capital on earth (the witch craft markets are particularly interesting) you’ll head out of town to discover some of the most remarkable (and little visited) ancient ruins. Passing through the Andes you first stop is Tiwanaku ruins, created by a culture considered to be one of the oldest in the America’s. During the course of the day you see the temple of Kalasasaya, Gate of the Sun, the monoliths Ponce and Fraile, Akapana pyramid and the semi –underground temple before returning back to La Paz. On the way back you can enjoy a delicious lunch near the Valley of the Moon.

Island of the Sun and Moon

Last stop on this journey through Bolivia’s past is Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. A stop at the attractive town of Copacabana located on the shores of the lake will give you some time to meet the local people before boarding a boat to the Island of the Sun. Here you will hike around the island and visit Pilkokaina ruins before arriving at the wonderful Ecolodge La Estancia. We recommend getting up early to see the spectacular sun rise over the Lake. You will also visit the Island of the Moon and the Inak Uyu ruins before returning to Cocacabana and then La Paz. One last night in La Paz before flying home will create the perfect ending to this ancient epic adventure.
