ISLE DE OMETEPE
The island of Ometepe lies in one of the world´s largest fresh water lakes, Lake Nicaragua. Ometepe served as home to indigenous tribes and cultures for many centuries, seen by the many pre-Columbian petroglyphs.
When you approach Ometepe by boat, enjoy stunning views of the island's two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas. Both have unique vegetation and great walking opportunities with spectacular views.
Concepción is the larger of the two, at 1610m above sea level it is Nicaragua´s second largest volcano. The volcano has tropical dry forest and worth a full day tour with a guide. The largest villages are Altagracia and Moyogalpa are all on the Concepción half of the island.
Maderas at 1394m above sea level is the smaller of the two volcanoes and covered with cloud forest. This side is less populated and has many natural treasures such as the San Ramon waterfall. Many pre-Columbian petroglyphs are here, plus organic coffee plantations.
