Even though Popayán had to be fully restored after an earthquake in 1983, it’s held on to its colonial charm. It’s often called the White City due to the prevalence of chalk-white facades of the homes and buildings.
As well as wandering through the historic centre there are many fine churches and important buildings to explore. We would recommend a visit during Easter Week when the town holds a number of processions, a tradition from the colonial towns that the locals have preserved.
Explore the mountainous setting of San Agustín and Tierradentro. The region was inhabited by a mysterious and enigmatic civilization that created fantastic sculptures using the local volcanic rock. Statues in the form of pumas, snakes, eagles, warriors and woman are still in near perfect condition 5,000 years after they were completed.
