MACHU PICCHU & THE INCA TRAILS

The fabled ‘lost’ citadel perched on a mist shrouded mountain.

To reach Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, take a train journey through the spectacular scenery of the Urubamba Valley. We can organize this as a day trip from Cuzco, or even better, stay in the on-site Sanctuary Lodge hotel or in the lovely Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel down in the valley to prolong the delights of visiting this unique place.

High on jungle-covered hilltops, Machu Picchu was never found by the Spanish conquerors and new parts of the ancient citadel are still being discovered. However the families that were still farming the terraces when Highram Bingham "rediscovered" it probably wouldn't have agreed it was actually lost! We recommend energetic visitors to climb the heights of the nearby Huayna Picchu for fine photographs though you need to come early as only a few visitors are allowed each day. The hardy can hike the five-day Inca Trail connecting the Sacred Valley with Machu Picchu. Arriving at dawn at the gate of the Sun is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Whichever way you go the arrival will be impressive. The citadel lies atop a precipitous mountain with the white waters of the Urubamba far below. Our guides will wax lyrical about the Incas architectural brilliance, stonemason techniques and knowledge of astronomy. We will make sure that you also have enough time to wander by yourselves among this unique wonder of the ancient world.

As well as the known Inca Trail we can offer you lesser known hikes such as the Lares Trek with an onward train connection to Machu Picchu and the Choquequirao hike, among the Salkantay Mountain Range, for a more challenging experience with no one else in sight for 5 days except for the odd condor.

The highlight of Peru
