WHEN TO GO: MARCH
Treasures & Islands
The Gold Museum of Bogotá is home to the world’s largest collection of pre-Hispanic gold artefacts, with over 50,000 pieces on display. Cartagena is a jewel of a colonial city with beautiful buildings, further along the coast hike to the mysterious Ciudad Perdida (Lost City) or for the less adventurous view the stunning Tayrona National Park. March marks some of the best sailing weather in this part of the world and once in Cartagena there is the opportunity to take a sailing trip to Panama through the pristine San Blas Island enjoying restaurant quality food served aboard a luxury catamaran.
Visit the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza in the late afternoon on the spring equinox to witness the light and shadow phenomenon of the ancient symbol of fertility a serpent slithering down the steps of the great Mayan pyramid. For those who love to explore the culture of the Mayas there are fantastic ruins throughout the south of Mexico but at some point you may want to spend a day just enjoying the beautiful beaches and with a visit to Tulum you can combine the best of both worlds staying in the relaxing spa themed eco lodges along the beach.
Swim with whale sharks
March marks the best time of year to view and swim with the largest fish in the world. Visit Gladden Split where you can learn all about these amazing creatures then get your flippers on and snorkel or dive up close. Belize is a fantastic place to learn to dive with many well respected dive schools and earn your certification in clear waters with great visibility and interesting sea life.
