Brazil

Don't be a bad boi!

On the last three days of June, a unique kind of folkloric pantomime, boi-bumbá or Bumba-meu-Boi plays out around Brazil. There are many variations but the basic version is the story of a farm hand who kills an ox to satisfy his wife’s craving for  ox’s tongue. An indigenous shaman then brings the ox back to life. The farm hand is forgiven and everyone celebrates. In Parintins the city is divided in support for two bois, or “oxen” Caprichoso (blue) and Garantido (red). People even paint their houses in blue or red to express their passion. The only place in the world you can get Coca Cola in blue cans!
