Peru

Peru encapsulates all the magic and mystery of South America: Lost cities of the Incas, impenetrable jungle, conquistadores and their quest for gold and silver among the high Andes. Today has become the 'El Dorado' for travellers and Cusco is one of the most popular destinations in Latin America.

Peru is South America's third largest country, and can be divided into three regions: the Andes, with its massive peaks, steep canyons, and astonishing pre-Columbian archaeological sites; the Amazon lowlands to the East; and the Coastal desert to the West. Travel in the Andes can be hazardous with frequent earthquakes, landslides, and flash floods. Despite these, visitors are drawn to the most enthralling pre-Columbian cities of South America — like the mysterious Machu Picchu.

Peru is more than Machu Picchu, other striking Inca ruins are found in the Sacred Valley, close to Cusco, which the Spanish built upon Inca foundations. The Spanish heritage is evident with their flower-filled plazas, colonial cathedrals and monasteries. The coast was home to some of the most ancient cultures in the Americas.

Natural wonders like the breathtaking Colca Canyon, the deep blue waters of Lake Titicaca and the biodiversity of the Amazon basin offer the traveller the chance to enjoy a trip of unbelievable variety. These places are now all easily accessible by road or air and railway.
