The Trip
Day 1: Ushuaia – Arrive Ushuaia
Day 2: Ushuaia – Embark from Ushuaia
Day 3-4: At Sea – Crossing the Drake Passage
Day 5-7: Antarctic – Explore the South Shetlands & Antarctic
Day 8: At Sea – Cross over the Antarctic Circle
Day 9-10: Antarctic – Return via Shetlands and Antarctic
Day 11-12: At Sea – Cross over the Drake Passage
Day 13: Ushuaia – Disembark
Day 1
Arrive in Ushuaia and spend the rest of the day exploring the city and surrounding area including the Tierra del Fuego National Park.
Day 2
This morning is free to relax. In the afternoon you will set sail on board the Sea Spirit along the picturesque Beagle Channel enjoying dinner as you navigate. The captain and crew with welcome you with a toast.
Day 3-4
The next few days will be spent crossing the Drake Passage. The ships stabilizers will make sure the crossing is as comfortable and calm as possible. This will not be wasted time. Along the way you can view sea birds including albatrosses and petrels that come to these krill-rich waters. A series of lectures and presentations will be held by polar experts to help you make the most when you arrive in the Antarctic.
Day 5-7
Arrive in the Antarctic and explore both the Shetland Islands and Peninsula. The exact itinerary will depend on weather and ice conditions but you will make two landings a day to maximise the opportunities to explore the landscapes and wildlife. The plan would be to visit the stunning landscapes of the Lemaire and Neumayer Channels, view the huge tabular icebergs and glaciers of Plenaeu and Paradise Bay and view the penguin colonies at Cuverville and Petermann Islands. There will also be the opportunity to visit several historic and active scientific stations to learn about life in the Antarctic.
Day 8
Today you will cross 66° 33′ 44″ joining a privileged group who have travelled this far south. At Crystal Sound you can see the huge mountains and glaciers. At Fish Islands you can observe the southernmost colony of Adelie penguins. If lucky you may also see fluking humpback or Minke whales. In the evening you the ship with navigate back north back towards South America.
Day 9-10
As you return back north you will stop back at the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetlands to view sights and wildlife you may have missed.
Day 11-12
The final days are spent crossing back over the Drake Passage, observing sea birds and whales from deck, listening to lectures and presentations from Polar experts and swapping stories with fellow guests.
Day 13
Disembark in Ushuaia after breakfast.
