The Trip
Day 1: Ushuaia – Set sail along the Beagle Channel
Day 2-3: At Sea – Cross the Drake Passage
Day 4-9: Antarctic – Explore the peninsula and Polar Circle
Day 10-11: At Sea – Cross the Drake Passage
Day 12: Ushuaia – Disembark
Day 1
Arrive in Ushuaia and board the boat. In the afternoon set sail along the scenic waterways of the Beagle Channel.
Day 2 – 3
The next couple of days will be spent crossing the Drake Passage. There will be a series of on board lectures and presentations by Antarctic experts to help you learn about the geology and wildlife of the white continent. Up on deck you will have the opportunity to see many sea birds that follow the wake of the boat.
Day 4-9
Arrive in the Antarctic and begin with a landing at Hannah Point where you will find a huge variety of penguins including Gentoo and chinstrap as well as southern giant petrels and elephant seals which bask on the beach.
Next visit Deception Island where you can bathe in the hot springs, a magical experience in such climates. You will also visit an abandoned whale station, now home to nesting gulls, skuas and petrels. If you feel inclined take a hike from Baily Head over the ridge to the crater in Whalers Bay.
Navigate further south to Orne Island where large colonies of chinstrap penguins can be observed as well as a beautiful view across the Gerlache Strait. On Ronge Island more penguins await as well as breeding pairs of brown skuas. In Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay the landscapes are spectacular, deep cut fjords and myriad icebergs. Here you will have the opportunity to set foot on the continent itself and take zodiac expeditions in the bays and around icebergs.
Sail through the Lemaire Channel to Petermann Island, inhabited by Adelie penguins and blue-eyed shags. You will attempt a landing at Pleneau Island where you may encounter humpback, Minke and fin whales. You will reach the furthest south at Detaille Island, just below the Polar Circle. At Fish Island you will land to see more Adelies and shags colonies. The landscape here is mountainous with spectacular surrounding glaciers. Sail north through the Neumayer Channel and Gerlache Strait to Melchoir Island where encounters with leopard seals, crabeater seals and whales is not uncommon.
Day 10-11
Leave the Antarctic behind and cross back over the Drake Passage. Spend time with your fellow guests sharing stories of the things you’ve seen. Go back on deck to watch for wildlife and attend lectures and presentations given by Polar experts.
Day 12
Disembark at Ushuaia.
