THE TRIP

Day 2 – 3: At sea – Sailing across the Drake Passage
Day 4 – 9: Antarctic – Exploring the Antarctic Peninsula and Shetlands
Day 10 – 11: At sea – Crossing the Drake Passage
Day 12: Ushuaia: Arrive and disembark

Day 1

In the afternoon you will board the M/V Ushuaia and met your naturalist guide and crew. After getting settled in you will set sail.

Day 2 – 3

The next two days will be at sea crossing the Drake Passage. This will not be wasted time. Along the way you will have the opportunity to see plenty of sea birds from deck including southern giant petrels and albatrosses which follow the wake of the boat. There will be a series of onboard lectures by expert polar guides to help you learn about the geology and wildlife of the Antarctic.

Day 4 – 9

The next six days will be spend exploring the Antarctic Peninsula, South Shetland Islands and the Polar Circle. Become enchanted by the exquisite beauty and pristine landscapes on the western side of the peninsula. You’ll have your first glimpse of towering icebergs. Apart from the huge colonies of Adelie, Gentoo and chinstrap penguins you’ll see Weddell, crabeater, fur and leopard seals. Minke, humpback, finn, sei and killer whales are common sightings.

The exact itinerary will be determined by the weather, but hopefully you will navigate through the Gerlache Strait, Errara Channel, Neymayer Channel and the stunning Lemaire Channel. Landings will be taken each day and these are likely to include Paradise Bay and Cuverville Island.

Further exploration will take you through the Polar Circle where you will visit the Ukrainian Station Vernadsky, the former British base Faradey and the rugged Yalour Islands. As you head north stop at the Shetland Islands where you will see huge penguin colonies and sail through the narrow passage into the flooded caldera of Deception Island.

Day 10 – 11

Say goodbye to the Antarctic and spend the next two days crossing back over the Drake Passage towards Argentina. Plenty of wildlife can still be seen from deck. Enjoy a series of lectures and presentations and swap stores with your fellow guests.
