The Cayo district is an area encompassing a large portion of the Maya mountains and forests with ancient lost cities to discover
San Ignacio in the Cayo district is less than half an hour from the border with Guatemala. This is a base for exploring the Mountain Pine Ridge and Maya Mountains, with dense forests that teem with wildlife and Mayan ruins such as Xunantunich and Caracol. We can also arrange crossing the border into Guatemala to see the magnificent Mayan city of Tikal.
This limestone region is honeycombed with caves which can be explored with our guides: some caverns were special tombs of the Maya who made sacrifices to the gods of the underworld. Tours can involve hiking, horse-riding, swimming in caves or 4 x 4 rides over rough roads.
We have found a number of exclusive lodges such as Blancaneaux, Chaa Creek and Pooks Hill to use as a base for exploring and absorbing the atmosphere. There is also the chance of seeing the elusive Jaguar.
A real flavour of Mayan culture
