Probably the best seaside town in the world
Colombia is one of the world’s best kept secrets for sea and beach lovers. The waters, the temperatures and the laid-back atmosphere are reminiscent of the Caribbean, but combined with a passion-loving spirit you can only find in South America.
Start your journey into paradise at Cartagena, brimming with 17th-Century colonial gems, churches, gardens, alleyways, and majestic castles and sweeping views of turquoise ocean that beckon you into its refreshing waves like a long lost friend. The town is the setting of Gabriel Garcia Marquez novels such as Love in a Time of Cholera, and an inspiring place to begin your exploration of the country’s coast. In keeping with the same style you’ll be staying at the Alfiz Boutique. Our local guides will show you the best of the incredible city.
Isla Mucura
After you’ve had your fill of Cartagena you’ll board a boat to head across to the Isla Mucura, part of the Saint Bernard Archipelago. Your next two nights will be spent at the Punta Faro. Your day’s can be spent relaxing on the white sandy beaches or exploring the amazing underwater world of the Caribbean during snorkelling or scuba diving trips.
Pirate coves and secret beaches
They say you can tell a lot about how pure a country is by the quality of its water. Take a scenic flight over to San Andres island where the water is so pristine it takes on the six different colours, the reason? It takes on the underlying tones of its seascape, including the pinky hue of its coral.
We’ll take a boat trip across the azure waters from which you can see the 30-different kinds of fish, as you circumnavigate Johnny Cay island. This place was once a hideaway of the infamous Henry Morgan, who is believed to bury much of his treasures in its pink sand during his 17th-Century rule of the sea. During your stay you’ll be pampered at the Hotel Casablanca.
We’ll take you from one treasure island adventure to the next. Fly over to Providence Island, packed with beaches, where you can take a gentle hike up to its 360-metre peak that gives jaw-dropping views of the carpet of multi-coloured sea that awaits below. On the way to the top you weave through rainforest to the quirky call of tropical birds and take a dip in the freshwater lagoons that ease the path. The island has many hidden bays and considered a place of rare and natural beauty by the organisation set-up to protect the earth’s beauty, UNESCO. Here you will stay at the Hotel Deep Blue before returning for one last night in Cartagena and returning home.
