Trapp Family Lodge

The Trapp Family Lodge is hidden on a mountainside, only a 15-minute walk from the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It is 4 miles from Santa Elena Town. It is built in Swiss chalet-style offering rooms and mountain suites all with good views of the surrounding forest and its own private reserve, great for bird watching. The mountain suites are newer and located away from the main building up a hill.  The Trapp Family Lodge is surrounded by tropical flora and fauna. The cloud forest is a haven for orchids and colourful birds.

Guests can enjoy drinks at the bar and lounge on comfortable sofas, great for socializing or reading. Just next to the bar is the fine restaurant which serves international and local food. The restaurant and bar overlook the gardens and forest. The country buffet breakfast an ideal way to start the day.

This rustic, no-frills, 26-room inn is comfortable and peaceful. Each guest room has a private balcony. All have 2 queen size beds, a telephone, hairdryer, safe, and an ensuite bathroom with hot and cold water. The Superior rooms and Mountain Suites have picture windows showcasing the forest. Mountain Suites come with a private balcony overlooking the gardens. There is WiFi and free parking. Please note that there is no heating so it can feel chilly up here due to the nature of the environment. Be sure to take layers and ask for extra blankets should you require them.

Visit the insect museum, butterfly gardens, frog pond and serpentarium to learn a little about the ‘creepy crawlees’ of the area. Take a tour of one of the coffee plantations, where you’ll learn about coffee production process. In the evening, go on a guided night hike to discover the forest’s nocturnal side.

The lodge’s private reserve cloud forest is like a mini Monteverde, with plentiful bird and mammal life. Enjoy encounters with some of the hundreds of birds, including the resplendent quetzal, capuchin and howler monkeys, sloths, tapir and cats. This is also a sanctuary for reptiles and amphibians. There’s a special garden dedicated to hummingbirds a short walk from the lodge, too. Among the mammals, you will have the chance to see four species of monkeys (capuchin, howler, spider and squirrel), white-nosed coatis, deer, kinkajous, agoutis, peccaries, tayras and two species of sloths. Although rarely seen during the day, the park contains five species of cats: jaguars, pumas, ocelots, margays, and jaguarondis.
