Created over 100,000 years ago by a volcanic cataclysm, this lake is surrounded by volcanoes and a patchwork of Maya fields and farms. Residents of the quaint villages which are dotted around the lake proudly wear the traditional dress that distinguishes them from the next. The old town of Panajachel is a good base from which to explore the area.
