Lake Atitlan

British novelist Aldous Huxley once called this lake ‘’the most beautiful in the world’’. Few can disagree.

Created over 100,000 years ago by a volcanic cataclysm, this lake is surrounded by volcanoes and a patchwork of Maya fields and farms. Residents of the quaint villages which are dotted around the lake proudly wear the traditional dress that distinguishes them from the next.

The old town of Panajachel is a good base from which to explore the area. Our local guides can take you hiking in the green pine forested hills and volcanic landscapes, through the colourful villages and markets in the region. Walking around the lake is one of the best ways to see it changing colours at different times of day.

For those who want some deep relaxation of body and mind a number of exclusive and tranquil hotels offer yoga and other spiritual retreats set right on the lake.

A natural marvel
