While it may be generally overlooked by many travellers who go to its bigger brothers, Argentina and Brazil,  Uruguay has a lot to offer those who decide to spend some time there

Uruguay has long been a holiday destination for Argentineans, many flock here in the summer months to bask on the vast stretches of golden beach that lay along the Atlantic coastline. Colonial towns including Colonia del Sacramento, with its cobbled streets and pretty houses, are great to explore.

On your bespoke Uruguay holiday carry on up the coast and you’ll find the super exclusive Punta del Este. After a day relaxing on the beach, sip champagne and mingle with the yachters in one of the beachfront bars as the sun sets.

If this isn’t your thing, do what the celebrities do and head for one of the trendy fishing villages like Jose Ignacio. By summer it’s a haven of private parties and beach shack restaurants, but try visiting in the winter and you’ll have the whole place to yourself.

Uruguay is a country that’s perfect to explore on a self-drive holiday. Motor around small towns, villages, vineyards and coastal roads. If bird and other wildlife watching is your thing the coastal lagoons and Cabo Polonio in Rocha province will be worth the drive.  Make your way inland to the many estancias that are dotted around the green countryside and we can build some time at these family-run working farms in any holiday. Go trekking in surrounding hills and horse riding and cattle roping with gauchos. After all that exercise head up to Salto to soak away any aches in your muscles in the numerous natural thermal baths.

We have selected a wide range of places to stay from the super exclusive hotels in Punta de Este, working estancias to wooden shacks or yurts set on the beachfront. We will take the time to discuss what you want from your Uruguay holiday and plan from there.

When to go:

Uruguay can be visited all year round. The summer months of December to March are hotter and become fairly crowded. April to November are cooler and you’ll have beaches all to yourself

All our tailor made Uruguay holidays are individually designed, but as a guide we can arrange a 12 day itinerary from £3,500 including flights.
