Travelling in Nicaragua is like going back in time. From the strolling around the colonial centre of León, take a boat to the tranquil island of Ometepe. Spend a couple of nights exploring this volcanic island. Then stop in charming Granada with a trip up the lava bubbling volcano of Masaya. Then it is over to the Caribbean coast for R ‘n R in a boutique hotel.

The Trip

Day 1

Arrive in Nicaragua and transfer to colonial León. The city of León is a historical city with an authentic atmosphere. León offers a quiet, relaxed and pleasant atmosphere that comes to life at night. In the evenings, you can enjoy live music, folklore performances and much more.

Day 2

In the morning take guided a city tour of León´s main sights. The centre with its colonial buildings, beautiful churches and the cathedral is a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site. Later take an optional tour, for example a hike on Cerro Negro Volcano, or if you want an adrenalin rush, you can ‘sand-board’ down the volcano, or take a boat tour through Juan Venado nature reserve. If you want to cool off you can head to the nearby beaches of Poneloya and Las Peñitas.

Day 3

Head south to the port of San Jorge where you get on the ferry to Isla de Ometepe, a beautiful island in Lake Nicaragua. Along the way, make a stop at Mombacho volcano for a short crater hike in this green cloud-forest reserve. Once at Finca San Juan de la Isla, take a swim in the lake, a walk in the forest or relax in a hammock.

Day 4

Today visit some of Ometepe´s highlights on an island tour. Walk to a reserve with monkeys, iguanas and many colourful birds including parrots. Then visit a coffee farm, pass by some ancient rock carvings and stop at a natural pool where you can swim.

Day 5

Take the ferry back to San Jorge and continue to Granada. Here you do a tour of the city, this can be in a traditional horse-drawn carriage. Granada is the second oldest city in mainland Latin America founded by the Spanish in 1524. Granada’s centre today has brightly-coloured Spanish-colonial architecture. San Francisco church and Convent, were built in 1529. There is a wide array of popular restaurants and bars to meet the locals.

Day 6

Morning boat tour of nearby Las Isletas, followed by a tour of the Masaya volcano and market. Take a boat trip on Lake Nicaragua. During the tour, your guide will point out interesting flora and fauna. The islands once home to native fishing communities, today are being converted to luxury holiday retreats. The Masaya Volcano tour is one of the highlights of the tour. Drive to the summit of the volcano, where you can peek inside the active crater.

Day 7

Transfer to Managua Airport for a domestic flight to the Corn Islands. Transfer to the port of Big Corn to catch the public boat to Little Corn. This is the place to go to relax and enjoy silence. The smaller one of the two Corn Islands located in the Atlantic, about 80 kilometres away from the coast. Little Corn is a true paradise with white sand beaches with coconut trees and coral reefs. The island has no cars or motorbikes on this island. Enjoy a comfortable hotel and indulge.

Day 8

Day at leisure on Little Corn Island. You can enjoy the lukewarm Caribbean Sea, relax at the beach, go diving or snorkelling, or explore the small island.

Day 10

You take the boat back to Big Corn and fly back to Managua. Managua is the capital of Nicaragua, home to almost two million inhabitants and is easily the largest city in Nicaragua. The city offers theatres, restaurants, night clubs, bars, and cinemas. At Roberto Huembes market, you can experience an authentic Nicaraguan street market and buy local handicrafts. Within the city you can enjoy the views of the Tiscapa Lagoon where you can do a canopy tour. Just outside Managua, the Montibelli Bird and Butterfly Reserve is also recommended.

Day 11

You are transferred to Managua Airport for your return flight.
